Playbook 389 · The Ancient Code of Karmic Return

The Tenfold Law

The oldest pattern in recorded history is also the simplest: what you plant, you harvest — and the harvest comes back multiplied. Tyrants meet their own machines. Schemers swing from their own gallows. And the bill that isn't paid in a lifetime is often paid by the house.

90 seconds: why the people who “got away with it” never actually did

Before we begin

You've watched it happen. And it ate at you.

Notice which one lands hardest — because that ache is the law trying to get your attention.

The one who cheated you — and thrived.

They lied, they took, they smiled on the way out. And nothing happened. So you started to wonder if being good is just being a fool.

The boss, the ex, the “friend.”

You carried the cost of someone else's cruelty. You replay it at 2 a.m. You want it to mean something. It does — you just haven't been shown how the books actually close.

The quiet fear about your own past.

Somewhere there's a thing you did. You wonder, honestly, whether it's still owed — and whether the bill could land on your kids.

The exhaustion of being decent.

You keep planting good and seeing nothing grow. You're starting to believe the harvest isn't coming. It is. The Tenfold Law is just slower — and bigger — than revenge.

The hero mechanism

The Tenfold Return™

Every great tradition encoded the same law in different words. Hindu and Buddhist sages called it karma. Moses wrote “whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” The Jewish sages said midah k'neged midah — measure for measure. Jesus said “live by the sword, die by the sword.” Newton said every action meets an equal reaction. Different mouths. One law. The Tenfold Return is simply the law remembered — and made practical.

I

You Plant

Every act is a seed — kind or cruel. Nothing you do is neutral and nothing is lost. The ledger records it the instant it leaves your hand.

II

It Multiplies

Seeds don't return one-for-one. A single seed of corn returns a whole ear. The return is exponential — for good and for ill. That's the “tenfold.”

III

It Ripens

Harvest runs on its own clock, not yours. The delay is not absence — it's the part that fools the wicked and tests the patient.

IV

It Returns — or Carries

The bill is collected in your life, or it carries to your house. Which is exactly why the wise plant for grandchildren they'll never meet.

The Chronicles

The law, caught in the act

History keeps handing the cruel the exact instrument of their cruelty. These are the cases — recorded by historians, scripture, and the courts of their own day. Read them once and you'll never un-see the pattern.

Ancient Sicily · ~560 BC

The Man Who Built the Bull

Perillos forged a hollow bronze bull for the tyrant Phalaris — a furnace shaped so a victim sealed inside would roast alive, their screams piped out as the “bellow” of a bull. He built it to win favor.

He was ordered inside to “demonstrate the sound.” The first man the bull ever killed was the man who made it. The tyrant who commissioned it was, by legend, roasted in it too.

Light: the cruelty you engineer for others is measured for your own size first.

Memory hook: never test-drive the torture device. Ever. It's a one-star experience.

Persia · Book of Esther

Haman's 75-Foot Gallows

Haman, the king's favorite, built a gallows seventy-five feet high — engineered for the public humiliation of one man, Mordecai, who'd refused to bow to him.

Within a day the plot unraveled. The king's command came down: hang Haman on it. He died on the very structure he raised for another — “then the king's fury subsided.”

Light: the height you build your spite to is the height you fall from.

Memory hook: he over-engineered the gallows. Classic case of measuring twice, hanging once — yourself.

France · 1794

The Architect of the Blade

Robespierre, “the Incorruptible,” once argued to abolish the death penalty. Then he ran the Reign of Terror — roughly sixteen thousand citizens sent to the guillotine, friends among them, on the flimsiest suspicion.

When the Convention finally turned, he was dragged to the same scaffold, in the same square, beneath the same blade. The orator who ruled by speeches died unable to speak.

Light: a machine of fear has no loyalty. Build it and you join its queue.

Memory hook: he kept the guillotine very busy — and it returned the favor.

USSR · 20th century

The Tyrant Who Couldn't Save His Own

Stalin commanded the deaths of millions and ruled even his family by terror — mocking a grieving son, exiling a daughter's loves to the gulag.

His wife took her own life. His son Yakov died in a POW camp after Stalin refused to trade for him. His son Vasily drank himself to death by 40. His daughter spent her life fleeing his name. Limitless power — and not one child he could keep.

Light: cruelty poured out at home doesn't stay outside the home. It poisons the well your children drink from.

Memory hook: ruled a superpower; couldn't run a dinner table.

The Universal Witness

One Law, Every Tongue

Across continents that never met, the same rule was carved independently: karma in the East, “you reap what you sow” in scripture, “measure for measure” among the rabbis, “what goes around comes around” in the street.

When unrelated civilizations all discover the same law, that's not superstition. That's a pattern in reality strong enough to find from any direction.

Light: you don't have to believe in the law for it to keep its books. But believing changes how you plant.

Memory hook: gravity didn't ask your permission either.

Literature's verdict

Hoist by His Own Petard

Aristotle demanded that stories punish vice and reward virtue. Dante built an entire Hell where each soul suffers a punishment shaped exactly like its sin. Shakespeare gave us the bomb-maker blown up by his own bomb.

For three thousand years, every culture's deepest stories rhyme: the trap returns to the trapper. We didn't invent that ending. We keep noticing it.

Light: the most satisfying story humans know is the one where the books finally balance. Live so you're on the right side of it.

Memory hook: the universe is a very patient screenwriter.

The chapter most books skip

When the bill skips a generation

Sometimes the harvest doesn't ripen in the planter's lifetime. The ancient texts were blunt about this — Exodus warns that consequences can visit “the children, and the children's children.” It is the hardest and most important reason to plant well: you are not only writing your own ledger. You are writing the opening balance your children inherit.

Haman's ten sons

The same scripture that hanged Haman records that his ten sons fell with the house he built on hatred. A fortune raised on a plot did not outlive the plot.

The tyrant's bloodline

Again and again the children of those who ruled by fear inherit not the throne but the wreckage — the suspicion, the addiction, the exile, the name they can't put down.

The flip side — and it's the point

It runs the other way too, and stronger. The grandparent who planted honestly, who fed strangers, who kept their word in the dark — leaves descendants standing on a credit they never had to earn. That is the harvest worth farming for.

This isn't a curse to fear. It's a reason to act today: the kindest, most strategic thing you can do for a child you love is to keep a clean ledger now.

The practice

Stop reading about the law. Start using it.

Belief is a feeling. Practice is a ledger. These tools live on your device — private, yours, no account needed.

Keep your own books

Log what you plant. Watch the balance — and what it projects at tenfold. Honesty here is the whole exercise.

About the author — CuongFBI / PhạmZuy CườngFBI

Refugee · Carlson School of Management, UMN · 10 years FBI national security & counterintelligence

At eleven years old I ran from Vietnam carrying the hope of nine siblings and two parents. Three months in a Malaysian refugee camp. American foster care. Three jobs at once while I earned my degree from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Then a decade inside the FBI in national security and counterintelligence.

Twenty years later I brought my entire family — both parents, all nine siblings — to America, and watched them thrive. I didn't write this book from theory. I lived a tenfold return on seeds my family planted in the dark, when no one was watching and nothing seemed to be growing. This is the law that carried us. I want it to carry you, and your children, too.
